Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani’s charitable and philanthropic activities are as noted as his business acumen and successful business ventures. Dr. Rajan Mahtani is the owner of several top franchises and businesses in Zambia. Some of these are Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investments and Finance Bank Zambia. All of these entities under the leadership of Dr. Rajan Mahtani have been known to dedicate their investments and revenues in charitable, philanthropic and CSR (corporate social responsibility) based contributions on a regular basis. Finance Bank Zambia is a top financial institution in Zambia wherein Dr. Rajan Mahtani holds the position of Chairman. Dr. Rajan Mahtani recently established the Steven Malama award in collaboration with the finance Bank Zambia.
The award was instituted in the year 2012 and was given in the year 2013 to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. From 2013 onwards, the award is presented every year to the top student of ZIALE after qualifying for bar in their first attempt. Students winning the Steven Malama award have shared their appreciation for the noble work from Dr. Mahtani and have also highlighted his humbleness by stating the fact that they were unaware of Dr. Mahtani’s significant contributions in establishing this award. The Steven Malama award has been extremely helpful to the students by appreciating and recognising their achievements and academic efforts in the form of this award. The award also carried significant financial support with a K15,000 cash prize for winning candidates. Furthermore, the award has been extremely significant in challenging the students to remain distinguished as well as committed to their legal professions as well as strive towards becoming the best, just like late Steven Malama. Late Steven Malama was a visionary and has been a role model for many legal professionals and upcoming law students. This award has provided opportunity and inspiration for law students to become like him and contribute towards the nation’s growth and development.
